Frequently asked questions

Because it is the most direct way to showcase your expertise without sounding salesy. You help people solve a problem, build trust and position yourself as an authority in your market. Selling comes later and becomes much easier as a result.

A podcast builds your thought leadership, allows you to charge higher rates, attracts more loyal followers, generates a wealth of content from a single recording and keeps you relevant to your target audience. It is the most efficient way to showcase your expertise.

A podcast is a content powerhouse because a single recording can generate dozens of pieces of content: the full episode, clips, quotes, social posts, articles and a newsletter. You record once and distribute it everywhere. No other format delivers as much return from a single investment.

Expect it to take three to six months before you start seeing noticeable results. A podcast is a long-term investment in your position, not a quick marketing tactic. Those who remain consistent will see their results grow as their back catalogue expands.

Especially then. The smaller the niche, the less competition there is in the podcast landscape. If you have the only serious podcast in your niche, you automatically become the go-to authority in that market.

Now. Not when you have more time, better equipment or know how to make it perfect. Your first episode does not have to be great. It simply has to exist. Everything that follows will get better.

Choose a niche you know well and that people are actively searching for. Describe your ideal listener as specifically as possible: age, profession, problem and ambition. Create every episode for that one person, and the rest will follow naturally.

Start with the questions your target audience is asking. What are they searching for online? What challenges do they face? Talk to customers, read comments on LinkedIn and identify the themes that keep coming up. Your expertise is the source, and their questions provide the structure.

Solo, interview or panel: choose based on how you communicate best. Are you good at having conversations? Go for interviews. Do you have plenty of your own insights to share? Consider solo episodes. Experiment during your first ten episodes, then make a deliberate choice.

Start with your own network. Who has knowledge that your target audience would find valuable? Choose guests who can genuinely help your listeners, not necessarily the most famous person, but the most relevant voice. After a few episodes, it will become easier to attract guests through LinkedIn.

Send a short, personal message through LinkedIn or email. Explain who you are, who the podcast is for, why they would be the perfect guest and what they will gain from taking part. Make it easy by including a link to your calendar and keep the message to five sentences.

Consistency is more important than frequency. One episode every week or every two weeks is perfectly fine, as long as you can maintain it. In terms of length, continue for as long as the conversation provides value, usually between 30 and 60 minutes. Never stretch a conversation unnecessarily. A focused 25-minute episode is better than 50 minutes filled with empty talk.

No, and that is exactly the point. Many people adopt a forced presenter persona and immediately feel uncomfortable, which listeners can hear. Be yourself and have a conversation as you would in a meeting. Authenticity strengthens your position as an expert more than a polished presenting style.

Write down ten to fifteen questions, but use them as guidance rather than a script. The best moments happen when you follow up on something your guest says. Instead of writing everything word for word, create a simple structure with an opening, three to five key points and a closing.

Use your question list as a safety net and keep two or three broad questions ready, such as: “What is the biggest misconception in your field?” If a guest gives one-word answers, ask a follow-up question such as: “Can you give an example?” or “What did that look like in practice?” This almost always opens up the conversation again.

Nerves are energy, so use them. Good preparation and a dry run will help take the edge off. Made a mistake? Pause, take a breath and start the sentence again. An editor can remove it later. Remember: listeners do not hear nerves, they hear a human being.

Start with something that immediately grabs attention: a statement, a question or a short story, rather than “Welcome to episode seven.” End with something memorable, such as a conclusion, a challenge or a question for the listener. People tend to remember the beginning and the end most clearly.

Watch or listen back to your own recordings. It may feel uncomfortable, but it is the fastest way to identify areas for improvement, such as your speaking pace, body language or questions that are too long. After every recording, ask yourself three questions: what went well, what could be improved and what do I want to do differently next time?

Start with a USB microphone such as the Audio-Technica AT2020 or the RØDE NT-USB. They are affordable, plug-and-play and already offer much better sound than your laptop or phone microphone. A USB microphone, a quiet room and a laptop are all you need to get started. Audio is more important than video, so invest in that first.

Not necessarily. Audio is the foundation. A camera adds value when you also want to publish your podcast on YouTube or create clips for social media. Start with sound and add video later.

A quiet room with soft furnishings, such as a sofa, carpet and curtains, already helps reduce a lot of echo. Avoid hard walls and large open spaces. Even a wardrobe filled with clothes can work surprisingly well as a temporary recording booth. Echo is the enemy of good audio, but a small home studio with a quality microphone can already produce surprisingly professional results.

Removing long pauses and filler words, normalising the volume, adding an intro and outro and cutting out any mistakes. For video, subtitles and colour correction are also included. These are the basic steps every professional edit should contain.

Learning how to edit takes weeks. An expert can complete in two hours what might take you an entire day. That time is better spent creating new episodes, finding guests and producing content. The same applies during the recording: a technician takes care of the equipment while you lead the conversation, allowing you to focus entirely on your role as host.

A basic setup does not have to be expensive. A USB microphone costs around €80 to €150, podcast hosting ranges from free to approximately €15 per month and free editing software such as Audacity is available. Adobe Audition offers more advanced features. For a fully professional approach, Podcast Jungle can take care of the entire production and distribution process.

Use a podcast hosting platform such as Spotify for Podcasters, Buzzsprout or Podbean. From there, your podcast will automatically be distributed to platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Google Podcasts. Publish your podcast on YouTube as well, the second-largest search platform in the world. Video podcasts perform even better there and provide additional clips for social media.

Cut the strongest 30 to 90 seconds from an episode. Look for a bold statement, an unexpected insight or a clear narrative arc. Always add subtitles, as most people scroll without sound. Test different clips on each platform and let the data determine what works, rather than relying on your instincts.

Use relevant keywords in your podcast title, description and episode titles. Choose a name that clearly communicates what the podcast is about instead of focusing solely on creativity. Start your description with the value you offer the listener, rather than introducing yourself. Actively ask listeners to leave a review, especially during the first few weeks after launch.

You can build your audience in three ways: collaborate with influencers in your niche for an immediate boost, sponsor other podcasts that already reach your target audience and position yourself as a guest on established podcasts. This allows you to tap into their audience while building your own authority.

Look beyond downloads, listening time and returning listeners. Are you being invited to speak or appear as a guest? Are potential customers contacting you and mentioning your podcast? Is your network growing more quickly? These are the real signs that your podcast is strengthening your position. Downloads are an indicator, but impact is the goal.

Conversations with guests and feedback from listeners give you a direct insight into what is happening in your market. You discover new questions, themes and problems that can inspire future episodes, services or products. A podcast is not only a broadcasting channel, but also a powerful listening tool.
